The matrix of the bone can be categorized into three types: cartilaginous, fibrous, and osseous. Each type of tumors/lesions has different characteristics accordingly:

  • Cartilaginous
    • radiolucent and/or
    • radiopaque
      • due to cartilage calcification
      • i.e. punctate or popcorn-like
    • Ex: chondrosarcoma, enchondroma
  • Fibrous
    • radiolucent
    • ground glass appearance or hazy & smoky appearance
    • Ex: fibrous dysplasia, fibrous cortical defect
  • Osseous
    • radiopaque
    • dense & ivory-like
    • Ex: osteoid osteoma, osteosarcoma
