A large scale map (covers a small area) shows more detail as there is more space to show detail. A small scale map (covers a large area or even a whole country, etc) doesn't have much space, so any detail is either shrunk or even omitted altogether.
an atlas should be used when teaching the history of an area... wars, weather changes... unfamiliar terrain..... all effect history...... where something happened is as important as what happened to whom.... the effect of geography on history can also make interesting study. Also when teaching literature, to detail the setting and in creative writing to make the story congruent to its setting..... of course to work out distances and directions for the topography... and what grows where to study the effects of geaography on culture .. sports.. eating habits...wedding seasons...
Imagine how the story would change if the setting were different
