tow vehicle with a standard pintle hook
Depends on what type of tractor and trailer you had in mind. For a farm tractor pulling a trailer, it's usually a pintle on the tractor which is run through a clevice on the trailer. For road going vehicles, the fifth wheel trailers are often used, where a trailer kingpin will be inserted and locked into a fifth wheel on the vehicle. In the case of an 18 wheeler, air lines will connect from the tractor to the trailer to operate the trailer's air brake system.
It is a trailer hitch generally used for towing heavy equipment on trailers behind larger trucks.
Hook dolly to front trailer. Lock pintle hook, secure converter gear support in raised position.
Pintle hooks are found on the back of a 28 foot trailer, they are used to attach a dolly witch is used to attach a second 28 foot trailer.
For the pintle hook, make sure it's securely mounted, make sure it's operational, make sure there's no signs of cracking or anything else compromising the integrity of it. The congear won't be so much different from a trailer pre-trip inspection... check the tires, brakes, lights, air lines, glad hands and glad hand seals, pigtail connection, inspect for any damage to the frame, tongue, and clevice.
Dog-trailer (Pup trailer)A dog-trailer (also called a pup) is any trailer that is hooked to a converter dolly, with a single A-frame drawbar that fits into the Ringfeder or pintle hook on the rear of the trailer in front, giving the whole unit three to five articulation points and very little roll stiffness.
So long as it is a commercial vehicle and the GVW of the trailer is greater than 10,000 lbs, yes. If it's hooked by a pintle and clevice, you will receive a "no tractor-trailers" restriction.
That Is called A Pintle Hitch.
These are items you would be more likely to find on a farm tractor than on a tractor-trailer. A tongue is mounted to the frame (or an auxiliary arm), and can facilitate a hitch or mount for pulling a trailer. A drawbar is the bar which extends from the tow vehicle (or another trailer) to a dolly under the front of a trailer. You're not likely to find a tongue on a tractor-trailer. The primary means of coupling is the fifth wheel, and some tractors may additionally be equipped with a pintle mounted on the back of the chassis. Drawbars are more common to dump trucks which transport pup trailers behind them, and doubles combinations which require more significant separation of the two trailers than what a typically A-congear provides.
The tractor weighs 20,000 pounds, the trailer weighs whatever it weighs, and the maximum weight of a loaded tractor trailer with one trailer is 80,000 pounds.
