Historically, poltergeists were thought to be the product of some form of apparitional encounter and were generally associated with ghostly activity.
Poltergeist activity seems often to be centered on specific people, often younger individuals.
However parapsychologists who study psychokinesis (PK) now realize that it is far more likely that poltergeist phenomena are a form of PK. And that the people involved are usually in some was responsible for the phenomena.
Essentially, the poltergeist simply is a manifestation of modifications to the environment. And this is precisely the formal definition of PK.
