In electronics and electrical engineering a power fuse is a type of sacrificial overcurrent protection device. Its essential component is a metal wire or strip that melts when too much current flows, which interrupts the circuit in which it is connected. Short circuit, overload or device failure is often the reason for excessive current.

A fuse interrupts excessive current (blows) so that further damage by overheating or fire is prevented. Wiring regulations often define a maximum fuse current rating for particular circuits. Overcurrent protection devices are essential in electrical systems to limit threats to human life and property damage. Fuses are selected to allow passage of normal current and of excessive current only for short periods.

In 1847, Breguet recommended use of reduced-section conductors to protect telegraph stations from lightning strikes; by melting, the smaller wires would protect apparatus and wiring inside the building. [1] A variety of wire or foil fusible elements were in use to protect telegraph cables and lighting installations as early as 1864

A fuse was patented by Thomas Edisonin 1890 as part of his successful electric distribution system.

The power seat on 04 Trailblazer does not go forward or back but all other power seat functions work. Stuck all the way forward. Could it be the fuse?

Probably not the fuse. If you hear a clicking noise but no movement then the power seat unit is shot. You have to buy a $450 new unit as it comes with the seat rails as well. check ebay. Fred

What kind of fuse is in the gas tank sending unit?

What kind of car? What year? Must be more specific. ANSWER i don't believe ther is a fuse on the sending unit due to the fuel pump getting its power from the oil pressure switch cause the oil pressure sw. has the lowest resistance of all current and the current being supplied to the fuel pump and the sending unit, and the gas gauge receiving the signal from the sending unit thus no fuse.

What happens if a heating unit turns off and will not turn back on.. the thermostat is on 65 and I have the unit set to 70. The fan will not even turn on. This just happened?

Check the fuse by the furnace, usually right on the main switch, if that fuse ok then check the fuse in the breaker box, if all fuses are OK, then turn off the power to the heating unit for at least two minuets, this should reset the unit turn it back on and see if the unit turns on. If the above actions did not work call a qualified technician.

What does it mean when your home indoor thermostat loses power and the breaker is not tripped?

The thermostat is usually powered by the indoor unit or air handler not the outdoor unit. Or the batteries have died, or the control fuse is blown.
