Check to see if you have the correct interface (Firewire, USB, eSata, etc...) available. Next, check if your operating supports for preformatted file system. If it isn't you just need to reformat it to a file system that is compatible.
Most USB Flash drives, both old and new, come preformatted. You will, of course, need to format one to change it's file system, and sometimes to erase it.

Excel file is called a .xls file. Or a spreadsheet file.
