A technical protocol is an agreement that all participants must adhere to. The term "protocol" is often used as "communications protocol." A communications protocol is a protocol that defines the rules by which two or more components communicate. A communications protocol normally includes a physical and a logical part. The physical part would define the physical media and signals used to exchange the raw data, while the logical part defines the raw data's semantics. For example, a simple serial protocol might consist of a physical layer agreement to use a single pair of receive and transmit lines R and T, crossed-over between two communication partners, and a connecting signal ground line. The R and T lines could be defined as using a standard asynchronous serial protocol with 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and even parity (8NE) at 19,200 kbps. The logical protocol would then define how the raw data is to be interpreted. For example, if the receiver were a controller for an elevator, sending a byte with value 1 might mean "move to the first floor," and the elevator might respond with a single byte of value 1 to say "I have reached the first floor."
