e.g assume your network is 192.168.16.0 of mask 255.255.255.0 i.e your n/w range is 192.168.16.1-192.168.16.254

if your computer has ip address of 192.168.16.2 and it has to send packet to destination 192.168.16.15 then from its ip settings looking at mask it comes to know that this destination PC is in its n/w and then resolving its mac address it sends the packet to destination i.e no need of gateway

but if now destination address is 192.168.17.5 then looking at its mask your PC comes to know that destination PC is not in its range so it looks for the defaulat computer for routing the packets i.e default gateway

if no gateway information is given in its ip configuration then it cannot send packet to destionation
