A quadrant is an area with a clearly defined boundary (such as 1m2), which is usually marked by a physical object (eg. a measuring tape or rulers).
Quadrants are therefore well-defined areas. You may for example place several quadrants of 1m2 along the shore to find an average number of crabs per m2. A quadrant study is a way to make generalisations about an area by collecting detailed information about subsets (smaller, random sections). This saves time, as the entire area does not need to be examined.
Since a quadrant is the upper or lower, right or left side of a specific place or thing, then it can be long and narrow, or short and wide. For example, when a physician examines a person's abdomen, the way he defines which part of the abdomen to which he is referring, it is charted (documented) as the "upper right quadrant", which means the upper half, on the right side of the abdomen. The same could apply to a parcel of land. The lower left quadrant of a piece of land would be the lower left section of the land, which can be any shape, as well. Quad means "four", therefore, quadrant means a "one fourth" section of a place or thing, and can be any shape or size.
Tornadoes can occur anywhere in Texas but they are most common in the northeastern quadrant of the state.
