A qualified stylist is a senior hairdresser who performs duties such as shampooing and conditioning, cutting, styling, coloring, perming, straightening, processing orders and handling money. A junior stylist is a hairdresser who performs duties such as greeting customers, shampooing hair, simple cutting and maintaining a clean and tidy salon.
A senior stylist has a lot more experience and years behind them than a junior stylist. A junior stylist only knows so much and is learning all the time where as the senior stylist knows it all and is the teacher.
A junior stylists should still maintain the jobs of a junior and be more visual on the salon floor. It is also their time to build up their clientele discounted haircuts etc. Once you have clients booking into your column then you can slowly start moving into your junior stylist job a lot easier. Everything else will fall into place after that; however, you still need to be aware even now you are not technically a junior - remember we all muck in. And you will do well with that attitude.
As a stylist, I have been there/done that with this question in an interview and it can be a little tricky. You could say something along the lines of, "Hairstyling is my passion and I am excited to learn and grow as a stylist and to further my knowledge within my craft."
