A ratchet spanner is a single ended spanner normally with a socket end that can be interchangable. There a key on the head of the spanner that allos the user to move the handle trough and arc when teh socket is on a nut/bolt . In one direction the socket is then locked and with turn the nut/bot and when reversing the action it moves freely. This allows the user to keep the scocket in conatct with the nut/bolt at all times. The key and be reversed to allow the unscrewing of the nut/bolt.
These differ from an opened ended spanner which has to be removed and then placed back on the the nut/bolt to continue the turning motion.
