It's great to hear from a true pet owner who hasn't forgotten their dear old loyal companion. You have to introduce new foods to a dog of any age very slowly (be it canned or dried food) or a recipe you are making up. Because of the problem with gluten in dog foods today I don't trust the manufacturers because there is no type of FDA control on the foods for dogs or cats. Here is my recipe: * Meat (free-range chicken, beef or ground round) *Free-range simply means there are no hormones in the meat and as little as possible of antibiotics. It's more costly and if you can't afford it just use the regular meats from the stores, but trim ALL fat off it, skin the chicken and be sure the ground round (hamburger is lean.) * Either rice or barley (soak both in water before cooking) * Pea and either grated or cubed carrots * A clove or two of garlic (good for the dog and gives the recipe a good taste the dogs like.) * Chicken or beef broth (WITHOUT FAT) and I buy organic, but have used Campbell's beef or chicken broth. Directions: Chicken should be skinned and then steamed. After it cools take ALL bones out and dice the chicken. If it's beef you can do it in the oven. Buy roasts not stewing beef because it's cheaper (the more the butcher has to cut-up the meat and trim the fat off it the more it costs you.) Ground round (hamburger) should be lean and can be done in the frying pan adding the garlic, rice or barley and peas and carrots and add chicken broth. It sort of like making a stew for your dog. So chicken broth, cooked diced meat, peas (can be frozen) and carrots grated or cubed, rice or barley. Then talk to your vet about the vitamins your dog should have Glucosamine is something good for your pet's bones and fur, but ask your vet. Whatever the vet gives you re Vitamins in liquid form then add this to the dog food you have prepared and mix well. I generally do a weekly batch and keep some in the fridge and the rest in glad bags for future use.
