your probably thinking of a time stamp, a time stamp is meta data that retains information for files and folders such as date accessed, modified, number of files in a folder, user permissions etc... but even if you delete a file/folder it really isn't gone the only thing that happens is your computer simply changes its inode entry to 0 which can be recovered with forensic programs the only way to truly remove it is wiping it at least 7 times or more even though its always there after that it just makes it a little harder to recover it.

The term record is sometimes used to describe a structured data type; that is, a compound type with a clearly defined layout. For example, a variable of type int may be used to hold a person's age in years. Another variable of type float may be used to hold the same persons's size in meters.

In order to keep a person's age and height together at all times, most programming language allow the definition of new types, often known as structured types. These are sometimes also called records.

This data type, for example called person, would contain both the int age and float height.

Characteristics of such a structured type (record) include a constant size and layout: all variables implementing a record of a given type share the exact same layout and size (but may of course hold different values).

Nowadays, the term record is mostly used with database technology (a "database record"). In modern programming languages, structure is the prevailing term.
