When a star comes to the end of the main sequence the nuclear reactions in the core stop. This causes the star to contract, which in turn causes the cores shell to heat up. This pressure enables fusion in the cores shell. This causes the temperature to increase which also increases the reaction rate. The higher temperatures cause the stars outer shell to expand greatly. Because of the expansion of the shell, the energy produced is spread over a much larger area, so the surface temperature is much lower, shifting the visible light to the red end. This is a red giant.

∙ 9y agoIt is a star that is much larger (in diameter) than our Sun, produces much more energy than our Sun, and has a red color, meaning its surface temperature is lower than that of our Sun. Note that our Sun is expected to eventually evolve into such a red giant. Examples of red giants are Mira and Gamma Crusis. Red Giants are currently about one and a half to ten times bigger than our sun
