The Roman Republic lasted 482 years, from 509 BC to 27 BC. It was established after the overthrow of the monarchy. The last king was a tyrant and the Romans vowed not to have a king ever again to prevent the return of tyranny. This was done by having the city headed by two annually elected consuls. Two men in charge would counterbalance each other and the shot term of office was a further limitation on their power. This arrangement prevented the concentration of power in the hands of a personal ruler.

Why did rome turn from a republic to a empire?

Rome did not turn from a republic to an empire. The Roman republic already had an empire. In fact, much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the Republic. Rome's political system changed from republic to rule by emperors, not from republic to empire. This confusion is caused by historians who use the term empire in two senses. One is the commonly used territorial sense (the conquest of other peoples and their annexation into an empire). The other refers to Rome's period of rule by emperors. The change from republic to rule by emperors was a political one, not an economic one.

What was the new government when Caesar expelled the last king with help from Brutus?

The new government was the republic. But Caesar had nothing to do with forming it, neither did the Brutus who was one of Caesar's assassins. It was an ancestor of Marcus Brutus who helped expel the last king and who also became one of Rome's first consuls. What civilisations lasted the longest?

Last guy said: Rome I say: China. Lasted thousands of years, still standing, only conquered once for 2 generations. Rome is famous for making republic and being one of the strongest empires in history. Some empires were bigger, but not stronger. China evolved enough to beat Rome later. They went from just spears to having the first black powder weapons. Rome was famous for its republic. Direct Democracy in Greece could not work with a lot of people, but Rome made it so it could work with a large empire. They made the first government for, from and by the people. They lasted quite a while with thousands of innovations, but did not last as long as China.

Who ruled the people of Rome politically?

It depends on which time of Rome it is. Monarchy Republic Empire Decline (spells Mr.Ed!) If it was the Monarchy, it means one person was in charge of all of Rome, meaning the monarch of Rome controlled Rome politically. If it was the Republic, there were two censors (I think) that ruled Rome, and these two censors basically governed Rome. (I also think that each censor could rule for only one year) If it was Empire, then there was elements of both Monarchy AND Republic, meaning that there was one monarch that controlled, but the power was limited by the Republic. If it was Decline, there was no ruler:) This is kind of a vague answer, and some of the stuff might be wrong if I remembered incorrectly.

What was one major change that occurred in Rome after its transition from a republic to an empire?

These are two different terms. A republic is a system of government; an empire is a group of countries under one control. Rome was an empire long before it had an emperor - the republic ruled an empire covering half of Europe.from Spain to Greece. The republic was a limited democracy ruled by the Senate, The next phase did away with the limited democracy and for 200 years became a power-sharing arrangement between emperor and senate.

How was the Egyptian queen Cleopatra related to rome?

When did Rome turn from a Republic to an Empire?

Never. Rome was an empire during the republic. As soon as Rome began acquiring territory and ruling it under Roman law, it became an empire. The period that people call the "Roman Empire" was actually the principate, ruled by one man, eventually called by the title Caesar. The one man rule, or the rule of the Caesars came about in 31 BC, after the republic had collapsed.
