The habitat of the sawfish depends on the species, and on the country where they are found. They are incorrectly reported in Wikipedia as living in only shallow, muddy water, but this is not necessarily the case.

They can be found in:

  • coastal and estuarine habitats
  • mudflats
  • marine waters, to a depth of up to 40m
  • the Freshwater sawfish is found in fresh or brackish rivers of northern Australia, with a range sometimes extending over 100 km inland
