From my experience - getting to work via walking, bicycle, motorcyle, car, bus, train or taxi, performing experiments of all imaginable types depending on the work in hand, having lunch, performing more experiments of all imaginable types, then going home again via walking, bicycle, motorcycle, car, bus, train or taxi. There might be an awful lot of thinking in between, but mostly recording experimental results and processing them by computer program. Some days I might actually write a computer program to do something new. It varies, but some days it is no more interesting than stacking shelves in a supermarket.

added: It depends greatly on what type of scientist you are considering. Many devote most of their time trying to design experiments to support theories/hypotheses (in other words, devote weeks/months/years of their lives designing an experiment that might actually only take a few seconds), writing papers, submitting them to journals for publishing, applying for grants (very important!), sometimes teaching (at a university, college, etc.) in addition to their own research.
