A pressing ham is a piece of fabric sewn in the shape of a ham and very tightly stuffed with cotton. It is used to iron curves into your sewing project.
The pencil in sewing is called a "Marking Pencil".

Iron and steel were very tough material back then and it was the only material people back in the 1800s could use that could hold up the sewing machine.
