Shoulders can dislocate if they are knocked forwards or backwards. Since humans tend to walk forwards or sometimes backwards (but less frequently sideways), shoulders are in a position where they are more easily knocked out if the person bumps into something or someone.

The best way would be to say that the upper arm bone (the humerus) is not in the socket that it belongs in. It isn't in it's proper location. There are plenty of muscles around the joint but it is very loose because of what we normally use it for. The muscles are called 'the rotator cuff' but they are not very strong and many forces can tear it.

It is where the ball joint of the upper arm separates from its socket.

Because if you do dislocate it the bone in that area pops out of the cup shape on your shoulder and it would be really helpful and you will have to go to the doctor about it.

Why is the shoulder apt to become dislocated?

The ball-and-socket joint is most susceptible to dislocation. Joint dislocation, or luxation (from the Latin luxare, meaning "to put out of joint"), occurs when the there is a drastic movement of two bone ends out of their normal end-to-end position. The most frequently dislocated joint is the shoulder joint. Since the socket is shallow and the joint is loose, allowing for the tremendous amount of mobility, there is also the greatest possibility of dislocation.
