A conifer is a shrub or tree that is found in northern temperate regions and that has cone-like fruits and toothed leaves.
Specifically, the term comes from the combination of the Latin words conus ("cone") and ferre ("to bear"). A conifer is a member of the Pinophyta ("pine-producing") divison of plants. It refers to araucaria, pine, plum-yew, umbrella pine, and yew family members as well as to cypress and yellow-wood family members even though the latter two include woody plants whose leaves are scale-like or strap-shaped.
