"Velcro" is the brand name for a product called hook-and-loop tape. Not very catchy, but more widely and cheaply available than the name brand. You can find strips for sale by the yard for next to nothing on sirsfabric.com.
velcro in my opinion is easier to use when it comes to closing jackets. it also closes quicker than zippers do. Zippers can get caught, in the fabric of the coat or jacket, but velcro would just stick together easily.
Velcro is the first commercially marketed fabric hook-and-loop fastener. It was invented in 1948 by a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral. Velcro is used for many different things, such as shoes, chessboards, etc.

Velcro consists of two fabric strips, one with a dense array of hooks and the other with loops, that attach when pressed together. Zippers, on the other hand, have interlocking metal or plastic teeth that can be opened or closed by pulling a slider. Velcro is typically used for temporary closures and detachable items, while zippers are more commonly used for securing openings in garments and bags.
