Smudging in ceremonial magick pertains to the burning of a bundle of herbs in order to purify the area in which magick is performed and/or the tools for a magickal cerimony. This is because the bundle of various herbs is called a smudge.

The smudging ceremony is also practised by many First Nations (Native American) people. It is designed to ritually cleanse a person or place and to raise prayers to the creator spirit. It is often done as part of a larger ceremony or prayer and can be done before, during and/or after. Traditionally white sage is used though neo-pagans often use common sage. Other herbs can be also used in the mix or as the primary ingredient.

The sage (and other herbs if used) is tied in a tight bundle and is burned at a smoulder to produce as much smoke as possible often over coals.

What challenges are face with the smudging ceremony?

I am assuming you are smudging a dwelling or building? If that is the case, then be aware the smoke detectors may go off. Be alert for any flammable obstacles to moving the sage through the rooms of the building, make sure to include the door posts and top and bottom. Let the smudgepot sit in an abilone shell to fully extinguish. Other than that, the only challenge I can see is the preparation and mindset needed for the cleansing.
