I see no Winchester Model 550-1 in the Standard Catalog of Firearms or Modern Guns. Check you source for the correct model number.
A shotgun mic is a microphone designed to pick sound from a distance. The are highly directional, rejecting ambient noise and sound from the sides and so has to be pointed at the sound source. Most shotgun mics are long and cylindrical, and so, look like a shotgun barrel. Hence the name.
