Splint bottom refers to the chair seat. The chairs are usually primitive or folk style with a simple open frame for the seat. Thin long strips of wood (splints) are split off of a green log and woven into a seat bottom around the open seat frame. Because they are split off and not sawn the strips are strong because of the grain running through the whole length and when green are very flexible. This type of chair was an easy one for farmers and others on the frontier to make using just the tools and resources available to them. They were usually made of hard woods like oak or hickory for durability.
