This would largely depend on the type of stand referenced. Stands are often used by preachers to hold Bibles and notes during preaching. Stands are also used my musicians in and out of churches to hold music during performances. A stand might also be used to support a statue of a particular saint (although is would be more particular to the Catholic Church).
