What is the reverse recovery time of semiconductor diode?

When a diode passes from forward biased to reverse biased it takes a short period of time for the charge carriers in the vicinity of the junction to recombine and create a nonconducting depletion region. During this time period the diode conducts in the reverse direction, this is called the reverse recovery time. Its different for every kind of diode, to get the value for a specific diode consult the datasheet.

What is the cause of reverse recovery time in a pn junction diode

What is a line frequency power diode?

line Frequency diode have very low forward bias drops but their recovery characteristic(time) is very long. Their softness factor is low.

What is the freewheeling diode operation?

Very often in translations from German to English the term 'free wheeling diode' for 'Freilauf-Diode' is used. Generally the correct translation for this term would be 'recovery diode'. The usage of the term 'free wheeling' only will be correct in mechanical aspects, e.g. the rear wheel of a bicycle or the clutch of the transmission line of a car.

Which type of diode used in bridge rectifier?

You can use most diodes for that purpose, and particularly silicon diodes. However, you should not use zener diodes and similar for rectification purposes. Otherwise, you will likely not get the intended result. If the voltage exceeds the avalanche voltage, then the zener diode will no longer rectify, but conduct the other way as well.

What are specifications of pn junction diode?

This can vary significantly from diode to diode (especially the reverse recovery time and peak reverse breakdown voltage), so always consult the datasheet.

Why tunnel diode are used in negative resistance region?

because that the tunnel diode is a standard pn junction diode in many respect except its highly doped pn junction so it has some characteristics in the negative resistance region another that its a standard diode

What is the symbol for a light emitting diode?

The same as the standard symbol for a diode but with a lightning bolt shaped arrow pointing away from it added.

Step recovery diode construction and its working?

The step recovery diode is used as what is termed a charge controlled switch. When the step recovery diode is forward biased and charge enters it, the diode appears as a normal diode and it behaves in much the same way. When diodes switch from forward conduction to reverse cut-off, a reverse current flows briefly as stored charge is removed. When all the charge is removed it suddenly turns off or snaps off. It is the abruptness with which the reverse current ceases that enables the step recovery diode to be used for the generation of microwave pulses and also for waveform shaping. To explain this in more detail, under normal forward bias conditions the diode will conduct normally. Then if it is quickly reverse biased it will initially appear as a low impedance, typically less than an ohm. Once the charge that is stored in the device is depleted, the impedance will very abruptly increase to its normal reverse impedance which will be very high. This transition occurs very quickly, typically well under a nanosecond. This property allows the step recovery diode to be used in pulse shaping (sharpening) and in pulse generator circuits. The high harmonic content of the signal produced by any repetitive waveforms from step recovery diode circuits enables them to be used as comb generators where a comb of harmonically related frequencies are generated.

Why can't a conventional pn junction be used for high frequency switching applications?

If the reverse recovery time of the diode is too long for the operating frequency, the diode will never turn off.

What does 4007 represents in 1n4007 transistor?

A 1n4007 is a diode and not a transistor, the 4007 don't really represent anything, the 1n4007 is a axial lead standard recovery rectifier, working peak reverse voltage = 1000V, the forward current for this device = 1 Amp. More data about it can be find in the data sheet.

Why smd zener diode contain three pins?

Because that is a standard package that placement machines can handle.
