A star is a bright sphere of plasma being held together by gravity and nuclear fusion.

You can see the star we orbit, our sun, during the day. Distant starlight, however, isn't bright enough to shine through the glare from the sun in the atmosphere. At night, when the earth's rotation faces you away from the sun and it's glare, you're able to see the light from far away stars.
