Generally, it is a conference between the Judge and the parties usually by their attorneys to determine whether the case is ready to be set for trial or whether there are still things to be resolved first such as "discovery" or settlement possibilities.
Arizona's trial court system includes Superior Courts, Justice Courts, Municipal Courts, and Magistrate Courts. Superior Courts have jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases. Each county in Arizona has at least one Superior Court. Civil cases heard by Superior Courts include divorce, property cases, probate, estate, municipal ordinance legality, insolvency proceedings, and claims over $10,000. For claims of $5,001- $10,000, the Superior Courts share jurisdiction with the Justice Courts. The types of criminal cases handled by Superior Courts include felonies and some misdemeanors. Superior Courts also have a special panel, called the Tax Court, which handles cases involving the legality of a tax.

Trial courts in the California state court system are called Superior Courts. Unlike many states, California only has one type of trial court. This means that all cases, from small claims, to divorce, to misdemeanors, to felonies are heard by the Superior Courts. Each county in California has its own Superior Court. Within a county, there may be multiple Superior Court locations. In larger counties, there are separate divisions within a Superior Court for different types of cases. The Congress of the United States originally established the Arizona territorial courts in the Organic Act of 1863. They organized the courts on three levels. They were justice of the peace courts, probate and district courts, and a supreme court. The district courts made up the main judicial body and tried the majority of cases. The transition from territorial to state status was smooth for the Arizona Courts. The state provided immediate judicial courts with the JP courts, superior courts, a supreme court and a federal district court.
The states divide jurisdictions between state courts in their own manner. Where I live, felonies are heard in superior court and misdemeanors are heard in another court.
Massachusetts has trial courts and appeals courts. At the trial court level, Massachusetts has Superior Courts, District Courts, Probate and Family Courts, Housing Courts, Juvenile Courts, Boston Municipal Courts, and the Land Court. All of these except for the Superior Courts have limited jurisdiction over particular kinds of cases. These limitations are either based on the subject matter of the case or, regarding civil and criminal cases, on the severity of crime or amount of money in controversy. Superior Courts have general jurisdiction over all levels of civil and criminal cases that may be heard at the state court level, but generally only hear a case if it is beyond the jurisdiction of one of the other types of courts. Each county in Massachusetts has its own set of these different types of courts, and may have multiple Superior Courts or District Courts or no Housing Court depending on the needs of the county. For a complete directory of the trial courts in Massachusetts, see the Massachusetts Court Directory related link.
