In the physical device called a "crucible", a small pot is heated, and golden items can be melted. Gold itself melts at a relatively low temperature, while alloying metals and impurities remain solid, and will float to the surface of the liquid gold. This allows the jeweler to skim off the dross, leaving only the pure gold, which when cooled could be fashioned into jewelry.
In literature, there are several books and stories that use the crucible as a metaphor for human desires and feelings. By "heating" all of the actors to an emotional feverish pitch, the characters will reveal their flaws and inner demons, allowing the true nature of the person to be revealed.
