An "Archetype" (in psychology) is a very basic archaic mental pattern that evolved in early humans and is observed indirectly by it's various representations in art, literature, and cultural practices in the form of common themes or motifs.
The tragic hero is usually a spiteful and rebelious underdog figure who knows all the while his passions and aspirations are dangerous or futile and will lead to severe punishment but go's ahead and does it anyway. I.e. see the Greek myth of the Titan Prometheus stealing fire from the Olympian Gods.
Another type of Tragic Hero is like Shakespear's: Hamlet who gets revenge for his fathers murder but also dies in the end due to the complexity of the situation and his own folly.
