An automobile transmission is a device attached to the engine that applies engine torque to the drive wheels in varying ratios. It's the device that you hear shifting as the speed increases to keep engine speed in a usable range.
The modern automatic transmission is full of a hydraulic fluid that flows through a maze of changeable passages to provide the various ratios that allow the engine to remain in that usable range. Like any device full of fluid, it has various seals and gaskets. As seals and gaskets age, they tend to break down and leak. For most seals the only remedy is replacement.
Transmission fluid can leak from many places. It could leak from the actual transmission itself, or any of the tubing that goes from the transmission to other parts of the car.
Coolant should not be leaking from your transmission the only fluid in your transmission is transmission fluid. A faulty transmission seal can allow transmission fluid to leak out.
