That's quite an odd question, because morphine is actually derived from opium!

Opium is the latex you get from the opium poppy - papaver somniferum - and it contains several useful opiates including codiene and morphine. It also contains thebaine, which although not useful itself, is converted into many useful drugs such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone etc..

The only thing I've heard of that is 'derived' from morphine is heroin, or diacetylmorphine. This was initially used as an alternative to morphine for addicts, because they thought it was less addictive. Unfortunately as you probably know this is definitely not the case and sadly they created a load of heroin addicts.

Heroin.. In my 'improved answer' I interpret the word "classification" as a legal term. It can also be a medical classification term as well. The answer given was: Heroin. The opium poppy yields several natural occurring alkaloid's of opium. Most are narcotics and one is not,(Papavarine). In short, from a legal definition, most drugs derived from Poppy's are classified as a Schedule II (2) through the Controlled Substance Act of 1971 or 1972(While President Nixon was in office). Also note that Codeine can be classified as a Sched.III (3) BUT only if it is mixed with certain amounts of Aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc. Plain Codeine Sulfate/Phosphate NOT MIXED, is a Sched. II (2)... If any of you have a question that you do not feel has been answered on Answers.com, simply Goggle/Bing, etc your question and you will get the correct answer you need. Thank you for allowing me to "edit' this answer.... Tom

They would include morphine, heroin, codeine, and thebaine. Thebaine is used as a starting base for a number of semi-synthetic drugs such as hydrocodone and hydromorphone.

Does opium on a drug test only means heroin sHow is up not oxycodone or roxicet?

Any Opioied drug can show up on a tox screen for that particulare narcotic and it will not difereciate between Heroin opium, oxy, vicodin morphine etc. there all derived from the same thing. Oxy is sythetic derived from Morphine, Morphine from Opium, Heroin from Morphine, Hydrocodone from Coidene, Coidene also from Opium. Opium has somthing in the order of i think 26 ingrediants:Morphine, Codiene, Theibeain, and so on. So in other words if you need a drug screen let them know what meds you have been on so they can expect a pop for "heroin" even popie seen bagles can possibly show as "o" or Heroin.

Where does Oxymorphone come from?

Oxymorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid drug related to morphine and codeine. It is derived from thebaine, a constituent of opium gum from poppies.
