VGA represents a set of display standards for computer displays. The cable is a common interface for all VGA compliant devices and comprises several parts:
Red, green and blue signals
The three colors are used to create all colors and brightness levels. Each one uses a 75 ohm co-ax cable to carry the signals.
Synchronization signals
Horizontol and vertical sync pulses are carried on two wires with a single earth line.
Control signals
A monitor can communicate with a computer display driver using other data lines.
A VGA cable carries all of the signals listed above and typically will have 14 conductors inside the outer sheath of the cable. Some cables can use only 9 of the 14 conductors - still sufficient to carry a complete signal but will not carry any control signals.
The cables normally have to be compact to allow them to be terminated in a 15 pin high density D connector although VGA can also be connected using 5 BNC co-ax connectors.
