There are three major mountain ranges, known as the Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre del Sur.

There are several active and inactive volcanoes, such as the Popocatepetl (5426 m/17802 ft), Iztaccihuatl (5230 m/17159 ft), Paricutin (2800 m/9186 ft), Chichon (1205 m/3953 ft) and Pico de Orizaba (5636 m/18491 ft).

Most of them are stratovolcanoes, which have very slow flows of lava, but are nonetheless quite dangerous, as these often spew pyroclastic flows (incandescent ash and debris) which could destroy entire villages in just a couple of minutes.

These volcanoes are the result of Mexico being atop three tectonic plates (North American, Pacific and Cocos Plates) which are part of the so-called Ring of Fire.

Michoacánâ??Guanajuato is a volcano field in central Mexico. There are several small eruptions here daily and they are always in a different spot.
