In the days before washing machines, a washboard was used when hand washing clothes. It was a corrugated surface used to help scrub the clothes after they were soaked in soapy water.
The device is not widely used today, although some of them are used as rhythm instruments in old country-style bands - sometimes called wash tub bands.
