If that is the case, the pellet provides a surface where the carbon dioxide can form a bubble through the process of effervescence or nucleation. The bubble of carbon dioxide provides the buoyancy to carry the pellet to the surface. Once the pellet rises to the surface, the bubble bursts and the pellet begins to sink again.If the metal pellet was made of some water-reactive metal such as calcium or magnesium, the pellet could be producing hydrogen bubbles on the surface as it reacts with the water to form the metal hydroxide. That being the case, there would be no need for carbonation to achieve the effect.
