They can't just go to a lake, river, or the Ocean for clean water. It is almost poisonous. It carries so much diseases that they could dye of anything. Water wells help retrieve water out of the ground so people can get pure water. The water is almost naturally purified from sifting through the dirt, it just needs to be filtered or boiled to get the dirt out of the bottom of a bucket.
