The Wendigo was a legend of various Native American tribes, (largely the Algonquians) that was said to inhabit the frigid regions of southeast Canada and the northeast United States. My understanding of how a person turned into a Wentigo/Witiko was a person going on a vision quest for spiritual power and if something went wrong, they turned into one. The last one in our area here near Pelican Narrows,SK was destroyed in the 1920's by the late John A. Custer-a very powerful shaman in his own right. This one seen by four late elderly men-now deceased-had no lips,pale skin,glowing red eyes and wore a gunny sack for a hood(like the grim reaper) and it hovered over Frog Portage creek toward the then-young Native men who were desperately trying to get away from it.
