A desert is any area that is barren, desolate, dry and lacks vegetation. Most people don't realize that the Antarctic is considered a desert as it meets all of these specifications. When a wet, fertile area within a desert exists, it is referred to as an oasis.

An area where ground water reaches the surface, usually as a spring, is called an oasis. The water allows more plants to flourish there as compared to the surrounding desert.
