This isn't for sure, but I would think, to keep animal levels down?? like the krill and shrimp. maybe to stop over populating species?? don't use in a project or anything lol that's just my opinion
A whale's niche is to eat the krill and keep their population in tact and to make sure that

Not only do they maintain their niche of the food chain but they are a tourist attraction in many places.
Whales have adapted to an aquatic niche, because that is the direction in which their evolution took them. Every organism finds some speciality, and the cetaceans (of which whales are a variety) have specialized in a water-based existence, becoming very good swimmers, having great ability to hold their breath, and so forth. Those species that walk on land have chosen another niche.
Killer whales, or orcas, are the largest members of the dolphin family. They are omnivores and are found at the apex of marine food pyramids.
It eats krill and provides food for leapord seals and killer whales. (those are its predators)
Billions, trillions. Whales have been killed for millennia. They were killed before the first humans walked the earth...same as all living organisms, they are killed, eaten, sink to the bottom of the ocean and are consumed by decomposers and they live as long as they can occupy a niche. Your question is open-ended. What whales?...When?...By whom?
