A wheel and axle is a simple machine (a machine that does one movement) based on the wheel. It is a modified lever that uses a smaller cylindrical form (axle) inside a larger one (wheel).

The wheel and axle, like the lever, can multiply torque, using a lengthy motion by the larger wheel to make a shorter, more powerful motion on the axle. This is its function when used to raise heavy water buckets in wells.

Exploiting the Use of the Wheel

By supporting the weight being moved, the wheel and axle allow the transport of heavy objects over rough or uneven surfaces. The simplest wheel and axle is a cylinder (wheel) with a hole through its horizontal center, through which a cylindrical bar (axle) is passed. Weight applied to the axle will still be subject to drag in the form of friction with the inside of the hole, or with an axle mount in the case of axles fixed to the wheel. Lubrication reduces this friction. The most common wheel and axle uses two wheels, one at either end of an axle, which supplies stability (in limiting the tilt of the system), and strength (by distributing the weight of the load).
Wheel/Axel: A simple machine which consists of two circular objects of different sizes. A wheel can be a crank, such as a handle on a fishing reel, or it can be a knob, such as a knob on a radio. The axel is the smaller section of the two circular objects. Doorknobs, wrenches, ferris wheels, screwdrivers, and steering wheels all use the wheel and axel.
A lever that rotates in a circle around a centerpoint or fulcrum.
A wheel is something that has majority of cases have a radial symmetry and a center and the axle is a place when turned as a result wheels are turned so you can say that movement of axle results in the movement of wheels . Axle is a important structure for the wheels and they cant function without axle.
The wheel and axle is one of six simple machines developed in ancient times and is in the category of a first-class lever. In its simplest form it consists of a rod attached to a wheel so that their movements are coupled when one of the parts is turned. The wheel and axle is used either as a force multiplier (such as a doorknob, steering wheel or fishing reel) or as a distance multiplier (such as on a bicycle or the driven wheels of a car). In the first kind of application, the larger wheel is used to create more torque (in the axle) with less force. In the second kind of application, when the axle is turned, the outside of the wheel turns at a greater linear speed that is proportional to the ratio of the radii of the wheel and axle. For example, if a bike wheel has a gear that turns eight inches in one second, and the wheel circumference is eighty inches, the wheel rotates through a distance ten times greater than the gear (and reducing the number of rotations of the pedals required). By varying the radii of the axle and/or wheel, any amount of mechanical advantage may be gained.

wheel and axle

n. A simple machine consisting of an axle to which a wheel is fastened so that torque applied to the wheel winds a rope or chain onto the axle, yielding a mechanical advantage equal to the ratio of the diameter of the wheel to that of the axle. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

wheel and axle

basic machine component for amplifying force. In its earliest form it was probably used for raising weights or water buckets from wells. Its principle of operation is demonstrated by the large and small gears attached to the same shaft, as shown at A in the . The tendency of a force F applied at the radius R on the large gear to turn the shaft is sufficient to overcome the larger force W at the radius r on the small gear. The force amplification, or mechanical advantage, is equal to the ratio of the two forces (W:F) and also equal to the ratio of the radii of the two gears (R:r).

The bigger wheel rotates around the smaller wheel (axle).Because the wheel is bigger than the axle, it always moves a greater distance than the axle.Yeah, so basically a wheel and axle is a simple machine that has two different sized wheels.

The axle is the smaller wheel.....B.T.W.
