First you should drink plain water and warm up before any whistling. After that start in vocal fry and slide up in the whistle register because they work in similar ways. ...if it hurts STOP! No pushing. The sound is made by the vocal cords vibrating very fast. This register starts at D#6. The whistle sound may not come out at first it will be very hard to hear but if you have a squeak (the whistle is supposed to just fly out of you. When it does remember what that felt like and squeak some more until your vocal cords are used to the feeling. ***DO NOT LIFT LARYNX IT IS NOT THE WHISTLE REGISTER JUST A VERY HIGH UNHEALTHY NOISE*** Hoped this helped if you have anymore questions just ask.

I've been looking for one of these for a long time myself. Something that you can whistle into and it will make it louder. I play jazz guitar and I whistle fun jazz lines to accompany myself, they way a clarinet or trumpet would. But whistling isn't the best sounding "instrument", and I would love to find (or develop) an instrument that you whistle into to make it sound like a more substantial instrument. Anyone know of anything like this, or have any insight on how to develop one?

I would say she's an Contralto with a five octave vocal range or a Coloratura Contralto. You are making a huge mistake by classifying her as a Contralto. She may have the lower register notes that Cher does but she is not comfortable in the lower register. She is best heard in the whistle register. She can make phrases and words in the whistle register and easy sings a C7 and well above effortlessly. Her whistle register sounds exactly like a flute or piccolo. She is a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano. A Dramatic Coloratura Soprano has the agility, flexibility and range of a Piccolo Coloratura Soprano but the power and the lower register of a Dramatic Soprano, which to the untrained ear sounds like a Contralto.
