A mammal is a vertebrate that feeds its young milk from its mammary glands, it has fur or hair, it has a neocortex region to its brain which basically means it's capable of conscious thought, reasoning, etc, it breathes air and it has three middle ear bones that are used in hearing. Wolves possess all of the characteristics listed above which is what makes them mammals.
