This is a skull cap worn by male Jews as a reminder of God's presence and as a symbol of Judaism, to the non-jewish world.

Progressive Jews only put on a yamulkah to attend a synagogue serveice or to worship at home.

It is usually made of velvet or satin or it may be crotche. it may even have the star of David or other Jewish symbols embroided on it.
