The yellow-crested cockatoo is actually known as the Lesser Sulphur-crested cockatoo, which is a different species to the Sulphur-crested cockatoo of Australia.

The Lesser Sulphur-crested cockatoo, or Yellow-crested cockatoo, is found on the Indonesian islands of Bali, Timor, Sulawesi and the Lesser Sunda Islands, as well as in Timor-Leste. The Australian Sulphur-crested cockatoo is unique to Australia alone.

The Lesser Sulphur-crested cockatoo has a darker yellow-orange crest than the Sulphur-crested cockatoo, and the Indonesian bird has pale yellow cheek patches which are more prominent than those of the Australian bird (many of which do not develop yellow cheek patches at all).

What does a baby cockatoo look like?

Cockatoos are a large type of parrot, distinguished by a crest. The crest raises when the birds are excited, alarmed or frightened. Cockatoos also have strong, curved beaks for cracking open seeds and nuts. There are many species, so they vary in appearance and colour. For example, the sulphur-crested cockatoo is a large white bird with a yellow crest. The galah is a smaller cockatoo, pink and grey in colour. The red-tailed black cockatoo is a large cockatoo which is mostly black, apart from a red-tipped tail. Cockatiels are also small cockatoos, and in their native state they have a predominantly grey body with white wing tips, a yellow head and a yellow crest. The Gang-gang cockatoo has a slate grey body, and the male has a bright scarlet head. Click below to see pictures of a variety of cockatoos.

What is a red-tailed black cockatoo?

A Red tailed black cockatoo is a glossy black cockatoo with a large crest that it raises when excited or frightened. The male has bright red outer feathers - hence its name - but the female has a tail with orange or yellow feathers. The female also has more yellow on its under-parts. The red-tailed black cockatoo is about 55cm in length, and weighs between 570 and 880 grams. An endangered bird, it is only found in south-western Victoria and south-eastern South Australia. There are several factors contributing to it being endangered. Bushfires are a problem, as they reduce its habitat, particularly large trees with hollows for nesting, and also reduce its food source. Agriculture has also resulted in loss of habitat. Surprisingly, the redtailed black cockatoo is largely subject to predation by the brushtailed possum which, although herbivorous, take over the cockatoo's nests.
