a zavijacka ( pronounced zavi - yatch - ka ) is a traditional slovenian folk headpiece. It is worn by the single ladys. They are not normally not worn anymore, nor are they made anymore. Usually they are only worn for folk festivals and by slovenian dance groups. These headpieces are usually passed down by ancestors. A zavijacka has a black velvet band that stands up on your head and usually has a white lace around the edges. It is decorated with golden sequin, beads, and sometimes a professional embroidery person will embroid the band with golden thread. the designs are usually very beautiful with grains of wheat, grapes, hearts, birds, flowers and what not. Attatched to the band is a white wrap that is tied underneath a womans head, a woman pulls her hair back into a ponytail or braid and pull her hair through a small stretch hole at the top of the wrap, usually right on top of the two ties. hope this helps!
