the diaphragm is a muscle located below the lungs. When the muscle tissue of the diaphragm contracts, it moves down, creating a vacuum inside the lungs, and pulling air into them. To breathe out, the diaphragm simply relaxes, springs back up, and the air is expelled. Not all of the air ever comes out of the lungs during an exhale.

Pulmonary ventilation or breathing has two phases. Inspiration or inhalation moves air into the lungs and expiration or exhalation moves air out of the lungs. The lungs are enclosed within the thoracic cavity. Thus changes in the shape and size of the thoracic cavity result in changes in the air pressure within that cavity and in the lungs. This difference in air pressure causes the movement of air into the lungs. Air moves from an area where pressure is high to an area where pressure is low. Respiratory muscles are responsible for the changes in the shape of the thoracic cavity that cause the air movements involved in breathing.

The abdominal diaphragm is (or should be) the major muscle driving respiration.

Inhalation:">Inhalation:When the intercostal and diaphragm muscles contract, the rib cage moves up and out and the diaphragm moves downward. This creates a vacuum causing air to move into the low pressure within the lungs.Exhalation:">Exhalation:When the muscles relax, the ribs fall down and in, and the diaphragm moves up which expels the air.

The diaphragm is a muscle that forces air in and out of the lungs. It is a muscular membrane located below the lungs. When it moves up, it reduces the volume of the lungs therefore forcing the air out. When it moves down, the volume of the lungs increases forcing the air in through the wind pipe (trachea)
