The ABS light apparently indicates the status of the anti-lock braking system. It is normal for this light to come on for a few seconds when you first start the car but if it continues to stay lit then it can be an indication that your anti- lock braking system is not working. In this event, you will still be able to brake but the brakes will function like normal brakes without the antilock feature. Needless to say you should take your beetle to the dealer to figure out what may be causing this issue as soon as possible. Hope this helps. Please post if anyone has further info. like causes, fixes, etc. Thanks!
There is a brake light recall that fixes this problem. Just take it to your dealer and the repair is free.
Check that you have the traction control button turned on.

AnswerWhen light is on bring it to a shop that has an ABS scannerit happened the same to my 99 beetle i scanned it and the code came up to be abs pump, i replaced it with a used part but light still on. if you plan it to do it your self you need to be really prescise when thighing those line bolts i already screw one of them and had a leak, had to use the old block with the new pump.but my abs light still on. could be a faulty part. but i figured there is an abs relay on the firewall. will try that tomorow.
