ships hull number/name
aft starboard corner
The right when looking forward from the aft of the vessel
The A36 Bonanza.
It is a three phase cable and tracked accross the aft mooring strut
Green on the starboard (right hand side standing aft and looking forward) red on the port.
The left of a ship is port and the right is starboard. Aft is the rear of a ship and the bow is the front of a ship.
If you are standing on the deck of the ship/boat and facing to the rear of the vessel (aft/stern) and you turn 90 degrees to your right then you will be facing port side (left). Now, if you are on the ground facing the aft/stern then you turned 90 degrees to your right you would be facing starboard (right) this is not true
An object moving to either side is "moving athwartship". On a northbound ship, east (90 deg off the bow) is "starboard". An object lying in the water to the port or starboard is said to be "abeam". Aargh.
You are facing forward when you are facing the front of the boat. The stern is behind you and is aft. To the right would be starboard and left would be port.
"Aft" is not a specific PART of a ship, but rather a direction. Instead of north-south-east-west, directions on board ship are given as fore and aft, port and starboard. Aft would refer to "toward the rear of the ship". Fore is forward, port is toward the left side, and starboard is toward the right side.
Starboard is to the right while facing forward with green lights on that side.Ship's captains sometimes display their sense of humor by having a sign on their desk that says, "Port is Left". If not sure, RED, PORT, LEFT few letters. GREEN, STARBOARD, RIGHT, more letters. All names only applied when facing bow from aft.
