The M16 is an American assault rifle produced by Armalite.
It was designed by Eugene Stoner in 1957 and was first introduced in the Vietnam War as the M16A1 in 1963, and has been in service with U.S personnel ever since.
It is a ..223 calibre, magazine fed, gas operated operated rifle and is accurate to about 600 yards.
The original princible behind this weapon was to create a lighter weapon platform. The M16 is made almost completely from plastic components. The 5.56 x 45mm round was specifically engineered to also be light, as it was designed to take the place of the heavier 7.62 x 51mm round of the M14 rifle, as troops could carry more than twice the ammunition with the M16 as they could with the M14.
The 5.56 ,when fired from the M16, travels at 3,100/fps and fractures when it strikes flesh causing fatal internal damage.
However, the M16 requires alot of maintainence to keep it operational as it has a tendency to jam in humid conditions.
